After the success of Grammy award winning songwriter and producer Robin Thicke’s debut album Beautiful World, the future looked bright for his second album: The Evolution of Robin Thicke. Why wouldn’t it do well? It’s a timeless work of art with a voice of purity, passion and soulfulness. It had the likes of producer Pharrell Williams and the CEO of Interscope: Jimmy Iovine on board. But the holy anticipated second album was missing one thing… Sales! The first single of the album: Wanna Love You Girl was making its way around the airwaves but it wasn’t enough!
Then with a twist of fate the video for the second released single: Lost Without U changed the agenda for Robin. It was a hit across the board: fans got a sexy, soulful record reminiscent to Maxwell and Smokey Robinson and pushed the sales of the album to number six in the Billboard chart; where it still holds strongly today.
Ironically, Robin wrote the song in a state of self-pity he said: “I was feeling really insecure. I was wondering because I wasn’t having commercial success – If I was talented enough - am I not sexy enough? I wanted my lady to tell me how fabulous and sexy and how wonderful I am. And how she depends on me, I would be lost without her telling me that”.
The Evolution of Robin Thicke brings to life the last two years of the artist and illustrates the roller-coaster ride that has been 2005 and 2006. The album tells the tales of love, loss, temptation, redemption and finding hope in a dark time. "A few months ago, I was suicidal still," he said, melodramatizing his anxiety over being in the doldrums. "I was on tour. Struggling and wondering if I was ever going to reach enough success commercially that I would be able to do another album or shoot another video. I thought ['Lost Without U'] would be my last video I ever did. Which is why I put my wife in it. I wanted it to tell the truth and wanted to represent what the last few years of my life is." |
