With a song title “As Good As This” and a voice as good as hers, Romina Johnson has cemented her roots deep within the soul community. Romina’s history, like others that have walked the soul path, has not been easy by any means but through persistence, love and determination we see the release of her new album “Soul River”.
The journey slows down through the middle of the set to send us some true silky down tempo flavours such as “Got Me Trippin” and the heartfelt “So Bad”. “Do You”, “You”, The sensual “Speak My Mind” and the ever so soulful “Hold on To You” remind us that soul music is well and truly alive not only around the world but its presence is heavily buried into this album. Quality music throughout this CD is what makes this a must have for the collection and a must have for the top soul albums in 2008. In a day where the well oiled machine presence of a major label is not so daunting anymore it’s great to see Romina Johnson take the strong hold in her music, stand up and be counted as a real player in the soul community. Time and time again we see soul artists restricted by label influence, advertising budgets and commercial viability of records but with Romina’s family owned production company, the cuffs are off and the creativity is limitless. The album hits us straight out of the block with upbeat title track “As Good As This” and continues to deliver with the sexy smooth “What Can I Do”. With solid soul joints throughout this album it’s very hard to pull this out of the CD player.
